Manuscript Submission
The QJAE publishes original research articles, notes and replies, review essays, book reviews, and editorials.
Comments, replies, or rejoinders on previously published articles are welcome and should generally be not longer than 5 double-spaced pages. The QJAE will not consider more than two articles by a single author, whether as sole author or co-author, at any given time. The QJAE will not publish more than two articles by a single author, whether as sole author or co-author, per volume. Submission of a paper implies that the paper is not under consideration with another journal and that it is an original work not previously published, in English or any other language. It also implies that it will not be submitted for publication elsewhere unless rejected by the QJAE editor or withdrawn by the author. The QJAE does not accept unsolicited book reviews.
Revisions of submitted manuscripts, or additional supporting files, should not be treated as a new submission. Instructions for submitting manuscripts and navigating the Scholastica system are here.
No fees are charged to authors for submitting to the QJAE.
Style Requirements
Authors submitting manuscripts to the Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics are encouraged to follow The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. Manuscripts should: be not more than 10,000 words, exclusive of references; include an abstract of not more than 250 words; be double spaced; have pages numbered consecutively; and be in .docx or .pdf format. Line numbering is encouraged, to facilitate refereeing, but is not required. The primary manuscript file should have no identifying information, to preserve the double-blind refereeing process. Authors are expected to document sources and include a bibliography of only those sources used in the article. Footnotes should be explanatory only and not for citation purposes. While initial submissions may be made in a wide range of styles, authors of accepted papers will be asked to bring their manuscripts into conformity with QJAE style. A style guide for authors is here.
Licensing and Copyright
As of volume 24 of the QJAE, papers are published under a Creative Commons CC: BY 4.0 license. Authors retain unrestricted copyright and all publishing rights when publishing in the QJAE under this license. Authors are permitted to deposit all versions of their paper (preprint, author’s accepted manuscript, or the published article) in an institutional or subject repository without embargo.
Editorial Process
Publication Ethics
The QJAE follows Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines on publication ethics, including authorship, proper research conduct, conflicts of interest, data sharing, oversight, plagiarism, and complaints and appeals. The QJAE’s full publication ethics policy may be found here.
Submission and Initial Review
Papers must be submitted via Scholastica by the corresponding author. Authors are strongly encouraged to provide ORCiD numbers and the names, affiliations, and email addresses of at least three qualified referees as requested in the submission form. The suggested referees may or may not be asked to review the manuscript.
Any additional data files and materials that authors wish to make available to readers should be submitted as separate file attachments in addition to the manuscript file.
Upon submission, manuscripts will be evaluated by the editor and the senior associate editor for consistency with the aims and scope of the journal, compliance with length and style requirements, and suitability for further review. The manuscript will then be sent out to referees for double-blind peer review, returned to the corresponding author for revisions prior to refereeing, or desk rejected.
Refereeing Process
Manuscripts that proceed to the refereeing stage will be sent to two or more referees. The process is double blind. Referees normally take about three to five weeks to review manuscripts. The editor and the senior associate editor will make a decision after evaluating the referee reports. The journal issues four types of decisions: (1) acceptance, (2) conditional acceptance requiring minor revisions to the manuscript, (3) revise and resubmit, which requires substantial changes to the manuscript, and (4) rejection. Editorial decisions are normally issued about two weeks after receipt of the referee reports.
Revisions of conditionally accepted papers will not necessarily be sent back to the original referees for review prior to acceptance. Revisions of papers that receive a revise-and-resubmit decision must be submitted within six months, and the manuscripts will go back to the original reviewers for a new round of refereeing. Corresponding authors may track the progress of submissions on Scholastica.
Resubmissions
Resubmissions should be made using the link in the decision email from Scholastica, rather than by creating a new Scholastica submission. Revised manuscripts should be accompanied by a separate “response to referees” document containing a point-by-point description of all changes made in response to referee comments. The author name(s) should not appear in either file.
The revised manuscript and response to referees will be sent to the original referees for review. Referees will normally take two to four weeks to review the revisions. The editor and the senior associate editor will make a final decision after evaluating the new referee reports. The revised paper will typically be accepted or rejected. A second revise-and-resubmit decision is uncommon. Editorial decisions are normally issued about two weeks after receipt of the referee reports.
Production of Accepted Manuscripts
Upon acceptance, manuscripts are sent to the managing editor for production.
In the first production stage, the manuscript is evaluated for compliance with house style. Authors will be asked to make changes to the manuscript if it is not in compliance or if the references are missing information. Authors will have fourteen days to revise the manuscript.
In the second production stage, the paper enters copyediting. QJAE papers go through two rounds of copyediting. The initial copyedit takes about three weeks to complete, after which the managing editor reviews the copyeditor’s work (this typically takes one or two business days). The first copyedited manuscript is then uploaded to the Author Work Area in Scholastica (under Manuscript Details), and authors are asked to review the changes and make revisions. Changes are shown using Track Changes. Leaving tracking on, authors review all edits and accept or reject them. Questions from the copyeditor must be addressed, and the comments should be left in the manuscript. Copyediting addresses issues of style, clarity, and grammar. No substantive changes or additions to the content of the paper may be made during copyediting. Such changes may transform the manuscript into a different paper than the one that was accepted, requiring the journal to revoke the acceptance until the paper clears an additional round of peer review.
Authors have fourteen days to review the first copyedited manuscript. The revised copyedited manuscript should be returned via Scholastica as a reply to the managing editor’s email.
In the third stage of production, the paper undergoes secondary copyediting. All remaining tracked changes in the manuscript are accepted, and author revisions are copyedited. Minor changes in response to any author comments are also made. The manuscript is then sent back to authors one more time to review the new changes and to respond to any unresolved queries. Authors again have fourteen days to review the manuscript. The second revised copyedited manuscript should be returned via Scholastica as a reply to the managing editor’s email.
Once the second revised copyedited manuscript has been reviewed and finalized by the managing editor, the manuscript will go into typesetting, the final stage of production. This process normally takes two to three weeks. Corresponding authors will receive typeset proofs in PDF format to review. At this stage, only changes to correct factual errors, typographical errors, and formatting problems introduced during typesetting may be made. Authors must submit their corrections to the managing editor within seven days of receiving the proofs. Once the proofs are approved by the corresponding author, the article will be published online at qjae.mises.org in both HTML and PDF format. It will also be made available at mises.org/qjae at a future date.
Publication
Upon publication at qjae.mises.org, the paper will be assigned a volume and issue number and will receive a DOI code.
Print versions of the QJAE are published according to demand. There are no print versions of single issues of the QJAE. The four single issues of each volume of the journal are compiled into one print volume once all four issues are available online. These volumes are available for purchase at the Mises Bookstore. However, corresponding authors may order up to six offprints of their article by emailing qjae@mises.org.
